    Product Description

    From the Manufacturer

    Manufacturer's Review (March 1, 2009)

Working to provide drummers with yet another sonic option, while at the same time utilizing renewable resources, that's ECO-X. The inherent qualities of this unique hybrid bamboo/birch shell provide increased high-end attack, while DW's X Shell technology offers unprecedented low-end response. The result is a drum kit with a full frequency range that satisfies a drummer's need to be environmentally conscious. Plus, DW drummer-friendly features such as True Pitch Tuning, STM (Suspension Tom Mounts), Proportional Counter Hoops and DW Heads by Remo USA all come standard.

Drum Gear - DW Eco-X Series Drum Set

    An Eco-Friendly Option for Drummers

The ECO-X series are sustainable bamboo/birch hybrid shells boasting DW's X Shell technology. The wood is from a renewable source, and hang tags are printed in soy ink.

These drums are built in Oxnard, CA by the same experts who make DW's Collector's Series kits--the same shell maker, same painter, same bearing edge cutters and final assemblers. So you're ensured the quality and up-to-date technology you'd expect. A seasoned drummer would love this high-quality, professional kit, and it could be the only kit a novice or young drummer would ever need.

    X Shell Technology

Drum Gear - DW Eco-X Series Drum SetMaking drums sound better is what DW does best. X Shell technology starts with VLT, or Vertical Low Timbre Technology. DW found that in experimenting with alternate ways to cross-laminate a shell, the tension on the shell could be greatly decreased if the majority of plies were run vertically, rather than horizontally. Just like a guitar string, the tighter it gets the higher in pitch it goes.

Shells must be cross-laminated for strength, so the idea of designing a completely vertical shell to achieve optimal low frequencies was never an option until now. The X Shell concept was derived from DW's popular line of VGE (Vertical Grain Exotics). The company had been laminating veneer in a diagonal orientation for a while, but had never considered the sonic benefits until Master Drum Designer John Good proposed it, looking to mimic the effect of a complete VLT shell for the lowest sounding drum ever. Mr. Good was right, and the result was big, full sounding drums with a huge fundamental, and all of the warmth, resonance and attack that Collector's Series drums are known for.

Instead of all maple or birch plies, ECO-X uses bamboo (a high pitched wood) and birch (a mid range punchy tone). To make this hybrid shell work and give it that deep warm DW tone, the company went with the X shell design to lower the note. The result? Deep, punchy tone with a nice attack.

    Vertical Low Timbre Technology

In experimenting with different exotic woods as alternate shell making materials, DW's Custom Shell Shop discovered that in addition to the different tonal qualities inherent in every unique type of wood, slight alterations in the shell's construction can also greatly influence sound. Some of the woods sampled possessed a vertical grain pattern that when tested, dramatically lowered the pitch of the shell. Thus, VLT (Vertical Low Timbre) was born.

VLT consists of arranging the grain pattern of the plies in the shell so the outermost and innermost plies run vertically, and not the traditional horizontal. The vertical grain places less tension on the shell, allowing it to vibrate more freely, resulting in the lowered fundamental pitch.

    Available in Two Finishes

ECO-X drums are offered in two durable proprietary matte finishes that protect the shells and offers maximum resonance--Natural Bamboo and Desert Sand, which has a darker tint.

    True-Pitch Rod System

To give drummers even more control over their sound, DW created its patented True-Pitch rod system. The rods feature 10/32 threads rather than the 10/24 that's standard on most other drums. The result is a more exacting tuning process.

    Suspension Tom Mount

DW's patented STM (suspension tom mount) system allows drums to vibrate freely, allowing maximum resonance while securely holding the drum in place. Because there are no washers or grommets inhibiting the lug rod receiver, choking is reduced and tuning is as easy as ever.

DW Coated/Clear heads by Remo USA

DW Coated/Clear heads by Remo USA come standard on all DW drums and incorporate a coated tone ring for just the right amount of muffling with plenty of resonance. Crimped flesh hoops provide maximum vibration and durability.

    Timbre Matched Drums

A shell's fundamental pitch is where it wants to be tuned. No more fighting with heads to find the sweet spot. We've done it for you. Every set that is crafted at DW is done so as a family. Before the shell is sanded, bearing edges are added or even one hole is drilled, every drum is ear-matched to belong together for life. In a word, tuning made easy.
